Introduction to French Poetry


“One’s emotions are intensified in Paris” wrote the novelist Nancy Mitford. From idealizations to disappointments, Paris has given rise to a vast range of affective mythologies which both diverge and converge throughout modernity. This conference will explore the many varied emotional dynamics which shape Paris in literature, visual art and film.

Nicholas MANNING

Nicholas Manning is Associate Professor (Maître de conférences) in American Literature at Faculty of Arts & Humanities Sorbonne Université. A graduate of the École Normale Supérieure (Ulm), he is the author of Rhétorique de la sincérité. La poésie moderne en quête d’un langage vrai (Honoré Champion, 2013), and Signs of Eternity: H.D.’s Trilogy (avec Clément Oudart, Fahrenheit, 2013). Founding editor of The Continental Review (, his research is currently devoted to the rhetoric of emotion in the modern novel.
